It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of Dr. Anthony L. Horalek, DDS, MS, a distinguished endodontist and beloved member of the Raleigh, NC community.

Dr. Horalek, known to many as “Tony,” passed away by suicide, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in his profession, a deep love for learning, and an unwavering dedication to his patients and the dental community.

His untimely death has left a void in the lives of those who knew him—his family, friends, colleagues, and countless patients who benefitted from his expertise and care.

Dr. Horalek’s journey to becoming a respected figure in the field of dentistry was one marked by an insatiable drive for knowledge and a passion for both art and science.

His academic career began in a different direction—initially studying design and illustration at the Kansas City Art Institute. This early love for art would later complement his work in dentistry, as he saw the intricate, artistic aspects of the profession that aligned with his creative vision.

However, Dr. Horalek’s academic path ultimately shifted toward the biological sciences, leading him to obtain a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned the distinction of being a Distinguished Military Graduate.

Dr. Horalek’s commitment to excellence was evident in his education. In 1995, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree with the highest distinction from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, where he was not only the valedictorian but also the president of his class.

His leadership, academic achievement, and dedication to the profession were apparent early on, and he carried these values with him throughout his career. After completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at Fort Lewis, Washington, with the United States Army, Dr. Horalek’s career trajectory would continue to rise.

In 2002, Dr. Horalek earned a Certificate of Residency in Endodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. His specialized training in endodontics and implantology allowed him to hone his skills and serve patients with the utmost care and precision.

As a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, Dr. Horalek was recognized as a leader in his field, bringing a rare combination of artistic talent and scientific knowledge to his practice. His patients trusted him not only for his expertise but also for his compassionate approach to care, which was evident in every procedure he performed.

Dr. Horalek’s accomplishments didn’t end with his clinical work. In 2017, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, further expanding his professional skill set.

His drive for continual learning and growth was unmatched, and he sought to integrate his newfound business acumen into his practice and endeavors. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Horalek had a wide range of interests and hobbies that showcased his creativity and zest for life.

An avid cyclist and runner, he enjoyed staying active and pushing himself physically. His artistic side was always present, whether he was illustrating, producing videography, or exploring new ventures through the founding of small businesses.

He had a passion for motorcycling and often found joy in weekend travels, exploring new places, and seeking out new experiences. His varied interests made him a dynamic individual—someone whose energy and enthusiasm were contagious.

In addition to his work as a practitioner and entrepreneur, Dr. Horalek was deeply involved in organized dentistry at the county, state, and national levels. He believed in contributing to the advancement of the dental field and was an active voice in discussions on improving the profession.

His peers admired him for his professional integrity, his commitment to furthering the field of endodontics, and his mentorship of younger dentists entering the profession.

Dr. Horalek’s tragic passing has left a profound impact on all who knew him. His family, friends, colleagues, and patients are mourning the loss of a man who was so much more than just a dentist.

He was a mentor, a leader, a creative spirit, and a person whose warmth and passion for life touched the hearts of those around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his contributions to the dental field, his community, and the lives of all those who had the privilege of knowing him will continue to resonate.
