It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Jim Ryan, who left us peacefully yesterday, surrounded by the love of his family. Jim’s death marks the end of an era for the English department and the entire school community.
He was not just a teacher or coach; he was a cornerstone of our institution, a pillar of strength, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege of working with him.
Jim’s contributions to the school went far beyond the classroom. As an English teacher, he inspired countless students with his passion for literature and storytelling.
His classes were never just about reading and writing; they were about the power of words to shape lives, to bring understanding, and to foster empathy. Jim’s enthusiasm for literature was contagious, and he had an uncanny ability to make even the most challenging texts come to life.
His students didn’t just learn about books—they learned about themselves, about the world, and about the beauty of human expression. Jim’s influence extended far beyond his work as a teacher. He was also a beloved coach, leading the men’s lacrosse team to multiple state championships over the years.
His leadership on the field was marked by the same dedication, passion, and excellence that defined his teaching. Jim poured his heart into coaching, not just focusing on the technical aspects of the game but also on the development of character, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
He taught his players valuable life lessons, instilling in them the importance of discipline, hard work, and integrity—lessons that would stay with them long after their final game.
In addition to his role as a coach, Jim served as the head men’s basketball coach for many years, guiding his teams with wisdom, patience, and a fierce desire to see them succeed.
His teams respected him not only for his knowledge of the game but also for his unwavering belief in their potential. Jim was always there for his athletes, offering encouragement and support through every victory and defeat.
His leadership and dedication to the team were second to none, and his impact on his players’ lives will be remembered by many. Perhaps one of Jim’s most enduring legacies is his work with the yearbook.
Year after year, he took on the enormous task of leading and organizing the yearbook, a responsibility he approached with creativity, skill, and a sense of humor. Jim’s ability to capture the essence of each school year, to preserve the memories of those fleeting moments, was unmatched.
The yearbook was not just a collection of photographs and text—it was a testament to the vibrant spirit of the school, a work of art that Jim crafted with care and attention to detail.
Many of us will also remember the unforgettable sound of Jim’s voice echoing through our ceremonies. Whether it was Junior Mass, graduation, or other special events, Jim’s voice became an iconic part of our school’s tradition.
With pride and precision, he called out the names of students as they crossed the stage, his voice resonating with the joy and accomplishment of the moment. For many, Jim’s voice became a symbol of the milestones we achieved and the community we shared.
It was a voice that brought warmth, excitement, and a sense of belonging. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was known for his rare gift of lifting spirits and making others laugh.
He had an infectious sense of humor and an incredible ability to create spaces where students felt seen, valued, and free to be themselves. Jim was someone who could turn a tough day into a memorable one with just a few words or a well-timed joke.
His presence in the hallways, classrooms, and athletic fields made everyone feel at home, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. As a faith-filled community, we now come together to remember and celebrate Jim’s life.
In the days ahead, we will gather for prayer and reflection, finding comfort in each other and in the knowledge that Jim’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. Fr. Luke will lead the Rosary at 7:45 a.m. on Monday in the chapel, and all are welcome to join in prayer.
Additional opportunities for prayer, reflection, and remembrance will be shared, and our counselors and Spiritual Life team will be available to support students and staff as we grieve together.
Please keep Jim’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. His wife and children have lost a husband and father, and his extended family, both by blood and by heart, mourn the loss of a man whose generosity, kindness, and passion for life will never be forgotten.
Jim’s legacy is one of service, of love for others, and of dedication to making the world a better place. He leaves behind a school community that will forever be grateful for the time he spent with us, for the lessons he taught us, and for the love he gave so freely.
